He has been active in the commercial/investment real estate industry for more than 25 years and has completed over 300 transactions. Richards founded Highland Commercial in 1999 and quickly grew his firm into the region's most respected commercial real estate company. In 2003, he affiliated with one of the largest commercial brokerage firms in the nation – Sperry Van Ness. Over the past 9 years Richards has brokered the majority of all commercial land deals in Nevada County. He has also completed many of the region’s highest-profile commercial property transactions. Richards is also very active in office, retail and industrial leasing and now counts such national firms as National Semiconductor, 2Wire, Tektronix and Linear Technology Corporation as his clients. Prior to moving to Nevada County, Richards spent several years in corporate real estate. At Beazer Developments West and Hanson Properties West in San Francisco, he managed several large-scale, formerly industrial properties, and transitioned them into successful developments, including a half-million square foot office park in the heart of Silicon Valley (now home to Microsoft Corp.) and a Home Depot/Food For Less shopping center in Hayward, California. Richards was also responsible for the disposition and project management of a portfolio of land and improved properties valued at over $40 million. Richards began his career in Sacramento working in office leasing for Buzz Oates Enterprises / Sylva-Kirk & Company. He also spent several years in office leasing and sales in the East Bay Area at Norris, Beggs & Simpson. Richards has been a licensed California real estate broker since 1990. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1982.
